Information The Grahams of Menteith are an important branch of Clan Graham. The Grahams of Montrose trace their origin to a date before the 12th century. Known as the “Gallant Grahams”, they were chivalrous knights and fought in many of Scotland’s battles, including the Battle of Flodden in 1513. William, 3rd Lord of Graham, was created Earl of Montrose in 1504. The 5th Earl, who was called the “Great Montrose”, was created Marquis of Montrose in 1644. His ability as a soldier was outstanding, as was his campaign in Scotland on behalf of the king. He was executed in 1650.
